What surfing can teach you about life
Some years ago, we traveled through Costa Rica. We spent two weeks on the Pacific side in a nice little hotel away from the main tourist streams in Playa Grande. The white beach was long, beautiful and almost empty. Due to the waves and strong currents, swimming was dangerous but the conditions were ideal for surfing. Watching the surfers gliding through the waves we decided to learn surfing.
The hotel and the nearby taco booth were very private and laid back and we soon got a recommendation for a surf instructor – Abner. Abner was a young tico who grew up in the area.
In Costa Rica the lifestyle is Pura Vida which translates to pure life or simple life but it means more than that. It is a way of life – happy and optimistic. Abner lives Pura Vida. He is the brother of the taco booth owner expecting a baby soon from his pregnant wife. We have seen surf instructors before how they teach groups of tourists just about the right technique. Abner was different. He calmly took the time to explain the overall idea of surfing on the beach and then took us into the waves, one after the other.
We learned to read the sea and practiced and soon were able to stand on the board to surf into more or less the direction we wanted.
From all the surfing, one idea really stuck and this is what Abner called the Inner Wave. You need to follow not only the wave in the sea but also your Inner Wave. When you look to the right, you will turn right a bit, if you turn left, the board will turn left. It really works. It is magic.
This is true in life as well. Sometimes you shall just trust your Inner Wave and listen to your (positive) inner voice. If you want to reach your goals but feel distracted, focus and look into the direction you want to go.
We are excited to learn what you think and and please do not hesitate to contact us if you should have and questions.
