I did not get my espresso
I recently had lunch in an Italian restaurant with a couple of friends. After we finished eating, we still talked a bit and all of my friends got their espresso but I did not. Why was that? Maybe the waiter did not like me, or maybe he just forgot mine. A lot of assumptions and then it dawned on me. There is a simple but often overlooked trick to get what you want. Why did I not get my espresso? I just did not ask for it.
This is a silly example of course but indeed a lot of people expect something without even asking. They expect a raise or a promotion. They expect to go out with this amazing woman (or man). They expect to become happy one day. Without asking, without formulating your wish, this wish is just a hope.
You need to invest, at least ask
If you want to have an espresso, you need to ask for it and pay for it. This is the same with goal setting. If you want to be in control of your life, you need to invest in your goals. You need to talk to your boss and ask for a raise or for a promotion. You need to ask this woman out if you want to have dinner with her. You need to step out of your comfort zone. The amazing things do not happen within your comfort zone.
Of course, such an investment can be high, even too high, and you need to be sure upfront if it is worth it. If your goal is to run a marathon, you need to invest a significant amount of time in training. This might be conflicting with your other goal to spend more time with your family and friends.
If I want to get an espresso I have to ask for one and be willing to pay for it. If we want to reach our goals we need to be ready to make an invest first.
Call to action
Think of one goal you would like to achieve in the near future. Then think about the required investment. Is it worth it? If so, think about the next tiny action, you can do right now in order to get started. This might just be to ask someone for help.
